چکیده

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of substrate interactions on the biotransformation rates and mineralization potentials of gasoline monoaromatics and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), compounds that commonly co-exist in groundwater contaminant plumes. A mixed culture was derived from gasoline-contaminated aquifer material using toluene as the enrichment substrate. Two pure cultures, Rhodococcus sp. RR1 and RR2, were isolated from the mixed culture. The three toluene-grown cultures were shown to biotransform all of the six BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene), both individually and in mixtures, over a broad range of concentrations. The mixed culture was shown to degrade all of the BTEX compounds to CO2, while the two isolates mineralized BTE(m-/p-)X, but biotransformed o-xylene without production of carbon dioxide. Studies to evaluate substrate interactions caused by the concurrent presence of multiple BTEX compounds during their biodegradation revealed a number of patterns ,including competitive inhibition and cometabolism. Ethylbenzene was shown to significantly inhibit BTX degradation in mixtures. MTBE was not biodegraded by any of the three toluene-grown cultures over a range of MTBE concentrations. Furthermore, the presence of MTBE at concentrations of 2 to 100 mg/L had no effect on BTEX biotransformation rates.

Temperature effects and substrate interactions during the aerobic biotransformation of BTEX mixtures by toluene-enriched consortia and Rhodococcus rhodochrous.

A microbial consortium derived from a gasoline-contaminated aquifer was enriched on toluene (T) in a chemostat at 20 degrees C and was found to degrade benzene (B), ethylbenzene (E), and xylenes (X). Studies conducted to determine the optimal temperature for microbial activity revealed that cell growth and toluene degradation were maximized at 35 degrees C. A consortium enriched at 35 degrees C...

The Toxicity of Gasoline Vapors Based on Knowledge of Fuel Components

The toxicity of chemicals in mixtures such as gasoline may differ greatly from that observed when the chemicals are tested as pure compounds. For example, metabolic activation is the critical first step in the development of toxicity after exposure to benzene. Gasoline components inhibit benzene metabolism and thus reduce benzene's toxicity. The extent to which inhibition occurs depends on the ...

Experimental Investigation of The Performance Response of A Spark Ignition Engine to Adding Natural Gas to Gasoline in Lean-Burn Condition

Considering the disadvantages of gasoline and natural gas as mono-fuel in SI engines has made the researchers to improve the performance and reduce the pollutant as the advantages of the application of dual fuel engines. On the other hand, lean-burn in engine may lead to the reduced pollutant. In the present study various mixtures of gasoline and natural gas with the gasoline as the dominant fu...
